MICR Check Printing

Previous Top Next

To print MICR Payroll Checks, you must have a current license to use Medlin Payroll (any edition).

If you are going to use pre-printed check forms, or are paying via direct deposit you do not need MICR.

If you are going to use blank check paper, you will need MICR.

Seeing strange symbols instead of the MICR line?

Reinstall Medlin Payroll Software.

If Windows cannot find the MICR font, Windows will substitute a 'symbol' font instead.

Reinstalling Medlin Payroll Software will solve the problem.

What is MICR?

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition.

MICR can also refer to the special font used to print the numbers and symbols at the bottom of a check.

The 'MICR Line' at the bottom of a check allows your bank account information to be scanned by machines.

To print checks on blank check stock

You will need blank check stock.

DO NOT use plain paper!

Blank check stock has security features - watermarks, micro printing, etc. - which help reduce fraud.

MICR Setup

Your Bank's Information

Refer to your existing checks or deposit slips, or ask your bank for a MICR Specification Sheet.

Plain Text ACH

Also known as the ABA Number, or the 'fraction' format.

This is used by the bank, if the check is damaged and the MICR line cannot be read.

The format is 123-456/7890, with the number of digits varying by bank.

Routing Number

Also known as the Transit Number.

A 9 digit number between the two transit symbols.

Your Company Information

Account Number

Your bank account number is normally found to the right of the routing number.

There is always an 'On-Us' symbol at the end of the account number.

Be sure to enter spaces exactly as they appear on your current checks.

Check Setup

Check Type

Select one of the check types which start with 'MICR'.

Check Number Location

Normal

This is the normal setting

Leading

Use a leading 'On-Us' symbol

Trailing

Use a trailing 'On-Us' symbol

Signature Lines

Enter '0' -zero - if the checks have a pre-printed signature line.

If the check has no signature lines, enter '1' or '2' to have the lines printed on the check.

Signature Title

Enter a line of text to print above the signature area.

E.g. 'TWO SIGNATURES REQUIRED'.

Interesting note, you bank does not have to honor any such 'request'.

MICR Adjustments

Negative numbers are allowed.

Vertical

Moves the MICR line in 1/32' increments.

Negative numbers are allowed.

Font Height

Increase or decrease the MICR font's height in 1/10 point increments.

Negative numbers are allowed.

Select Logo

Select a graphic to print on the check body.

For the best results, use a square graphic.

If the printed logo size is not what you desire, change the size of the logo file you are using.

Print MICR Test Check

Pay special attention to the MICR line.

Start with '0' - zero - in each of the MICR adjustments, and with the 'Normal' check number location.

If the printing is too low, make sure the 'Extra half lines of top margin' is set to '0' - zero - when you print.

The bottom of the MICR line must be between 3/16' and 5/16' from the bottom of the check.

The right edge of the transit symbol on the test check must be between 4 1/4' and 4 3/8' from the RIGHT edge of the check.

The MICR numbers should be .117' high.

A test check will calculate and show the height.

Print MICR Blank Check

Prints a blank check, ready for you to fill in by hand.

Keep your signature out of the MICR area

ØAny ink in the MICR area - the tail of a lower case y for example - can cause the check to be rejected by the scanner.
